National magazine readership over the last several years has been flat or down. Many pundits had assumed that part of the reason for this was young people abandoning print magazines for the Internet. That’s not the case according to a new study by research firm McPheters & Co. Young people are spending more time every year online, but apparently that hasn’t affected their reading of print magazines.

Following this morning’s post on the story below, Microsoft made it clear they are not content to let Google monopolize the shift to online marketing. It was announced today Microsoft bought aQuantive, one of the country’s largest interactive marketing companies. Microsoft paid $6 billion, more than two times aQuantive’s market cap. It should be a good weekend for aQuantive stockholders.

In a recent talk with some of Microsoft’s biggest customers, Bill Gates predicted the advertising model for traditional media would unravel in the face of more targeted and accountable Web-based advertising. He predicted that newspapers, traditional television, yellow pages and other media would rapidly migrate online to protect advertising bases that are increasingly placing their marketing dollars elsewhere. Even if these traditional media do transition to online formats, Gates predicts a tumultuous changeover ahead. It is similar to what Bob Garfield, a columnist with Advertising Age has been saying in his “Chaos" articles.
