“What’s in your wallet?” Capital One hopes its new co-branded “decoupled debit” card (with rewards) will find its way to your wallet soon, right along side one of its credit cards. What’s a decoupled debit card? In this case, it is a MasterCard debit card that can be linked to any checking account at any financial institution. Transactions are processed through the open ACH (Automated Clearing House Network) system. So why are banks worried?
When I emptied the mailbox yesterday, I immediately noticed the large, attractive, 4-color brochure from Abercrombie & Kent. The brochure’s title advertised, “Africa: Desert Kingdoms and Natural Splendors.” A subhead said, “An Extraordinary Journey by Private Jet.” It wasn’t a total accident the brochure found our mailbox. A few months back I had requested some travel literature from the Abercrombie & Kent website, and Africa was one of the areas of interest I had checked.

You know, take the long shot and ssswwwwishhhh! It feels great when it works, but it’s important to remember most coaches will tell you basketball games are won with great defense and strong fundamentals “in the paint.” That advice can’t be far off for business either, but every once in a while it’s still great to launch an hallelujah shot from the cheap seats.
