Just Push The Easy Button

by

imageThe Staples ”Easy Button” advertising campaign is one of those rare pieces of communication that works itself into the public vernacular.  It reminds me of Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef?” slogan with Clara Peller back in the ‘80s. That line even found its way into the presidential campaign of Walter “Fritz” Mondale.

It’s human nature for people to want the easy button. These days I know plenty of marketing people who would like to have one. There’s all that competition out there.  You have CEOs, CFOs and boards of directors asking for accountability in marketing. There are time-crunched, empowered consumers ready and enabled to ignore or avert boring, irrelevant messages. You can hear the marketer’s cry, “Hey, this is tough...let’s just push the easy button.”

“A” is for Accountability

by

When it comes to marketing accountability, “we know there is no silver bullet and chances are that no great epiphany will solve everyone’s [marketing] accountability challenge,” says Association of National Advertisers President and CEO Robert Liodice, in a recent ANA blog posting, the third in a four-part series.  See how businesses are reinventing the way they look at marketing accountability by using analytics as an asset and creating a culture of accountability.

Google Pages + Blogger + Measure Map = Good Product

by

Yesterday I noticed Google Pages had opened up again so I hurried over and tried it out quick before they closed it up again. I have to admit that it isn’t quite what I was hoping it would be but even so it’s still somewhat impressive. The editing features are nice if not a bit slow and I thought they were easy enough to use that even my mom could set up a site without calling me too many times.

The problem is I don’t understand why anybody would use Google Pages instead of Blogger, TypePad or WordPress.com to name just a few hosted blog choices. There isn’t really much you can do with Google Pages beyond setting up a collection of static pages.  It’s still in beta (go figure!) but I was hoping that you would be able to do more with the look and layout than select from the limited gallery of designs provided. When it comes down to it, all you can do right now is edit your content and format it with the tools they provided. If you’re comfortable with html you can switch over and edit the html...but only the content and not the site design or layout.

Content Wars?

by

imageThe Googlization of media seems to be accelerating. Not content to be the king of search, Google is reaching into radio, television and print. They are starting their own Internet-payment service that will compete with eBay’s PayPal. They are testing a service that could compete with eBay itself and other etailers. They are taking on the web design market. They are raising the ire of some authors, publishers and libraries with their plans to digitize pages in copyrighted books, and offer those pages as results in search content.

Quimble: Add Polls to Your Site Easily

by

Every so often Sundog gets a client wanting to add a poll to their site for one reason or another. Sometimes we’ve rolled one ourselves or in a few cases have tried using a 3rd party solution that’s given us so-so results.

Quimble is one of the better poll providers I’ve come across so far and for those of you keeping score is another web2.0 application built using Ruby on Rails. Polls can be shared or private and can be posted directly on your own site or have it displayed on Quimble (or both I assume). You’re given a variety of ways to display your poll and can even style it to your liking if you choose the CSS route. Polls are easy to create and as far as I could tell there is no limit to the number of answers per poll or the number of polls you can have.

I created my own poll in a matter of minutes including the time it took to set up my account, you can view it after the jump.
