Study Shows Email Continues As Strong Marketing Tool

by

Some marketing pundits have predicted decreased effectiveness for email and email marketing. Not so, according to DoubleClick’s Sixth Annual Consumer Email Study.

The study reveals that 78 percent of consumers have made a purchase as the result of an email message and 59 percent have redeemed an email coupon in a store. A strong brand is obviously important with 74 percent of consumers saying “a brand I know and trust” was a key consideration when responding to email marketing.

WordPress 2.0 Released

by

WordPress released version 2.0 of it’s amazing and popular open source blogging platform over the holiday weekend. With a focus on easy installation, usability and web standards, WordPress is one of the best blogging tools you can use in my opinion. Available both as an install and a hosted option you can be up and running a site with WordPress in a matter of minutes.

Yahoo Web Hosting recently announced that WordPress will be included in their hosting packages as a simple install. If 2005 was exciting for WordPress, 2006 looks to be very promising as well.

BlockRocker: Geographic Classifieds

by

BlockRocker takes free online classifieds to a new level with the inclusion of Google Maps to let you shop geographically. Basically it’s like Craigslist with Google Maps thrown on top to help you buy or sell. There are only 80 classifieds currently so the local aspect of it is tough to appreciate, but I can see how this could really catch on if more people were using it. Strangely over 250,00 people have viewed the site in the past month, so if you have something good to sell now would be the time to post it as it’s sure to be seen.

Microsoft Follows Web Standards?

by

An unnofficial survey of how well high-profile tech sites meet Web standards by forevergeek results in somewhat surprising results. Of the 20+ sites currently listed, Microsoft has two (microsoft.com and msn.com) of the four that were error free. On the other end of the spectrum, C|Net defies logic with 1400+ errors while Slashdot and Yahoo! end up in the 200’s. Most of the other sites fall somewhere between one to twenty errors which isn’t too bad if you ask me. But if Microsoft is going to suddenly embrace the zero error lifestyle, I think everybody else needs to pick it up a couple notches.

Wondering how well your site adheres to the standards set up by the W3C? Use the W3C validator and find out.

Instant Messaging Gains in Workplace

by

It appears that users of instant messaging technology really do use it for work. A study released last week by AOL indicated that 58 percent of those who access IM in the workplace use it to communicate with colleagues; 49 percent use it to get answers to make business decisions; and 28 percent use it stay in touch with clients and customers.

The study’s results are surprising, but the timing isn’t. Google (which owns 5 percent of AOL) has begun working with AOL to allow their respective IM programs to communicate with each other, a move that will simplify communication for users. Not at the table were MSN and Yahoo, which are working to integrate their own IM applications.
