Disney’s ABC was the first network with shows for sale on iTunes and now they look to be the first with a full range of shows available for viewing online, beginning with ‘Lost’ and ‘Desperate Housewives’ in May. For two months, the network plans to test free online video-on-demand with a range of shows, from the previously mentioned to ones from other Disney-owned channels. The shows will, of course, feature commercials, but not the ones you’d have seen watching your local affiliate. Disney has lined up special sponsors for its online experiment and you won’t be able to skip the commercials. You do get fast-forward, reverse and pause functionality, but they won’t work while the commercials are on. Disney is also launching a soap opera broadband network in April available only to Verizon subscribers.

There is an interesting topic on Adrants today. The whole misappropriated make-your-own-tahoe-commercial-thing last week really got this discussion going. With all the capabilities that Web 2.0 provides, people are now creating more content than the media giants. There are over 30 million blogs in this country alone, not to mention podcasts, video sharing, photo sharing, do-it-yourself commercials, and social networks.

It looks like there is another Web 2.0 business model ready to compete with the Freemium model I talked about last week. Facebook, the popular community site for college and high school students, has been shopping itself around for sale and rumors have them asking for an amount of money that includes the word “billions.” That’s a far cry from anything with any part of the word “free” in it. Techdirt probably put it best when talking about the head of Fox Interactive who recently purchased MySpace for $580 million when they said, “many of these companies do have a business model—it’s convincing people like him that they’re worth ridiculous amounts of money.”
So, if there are any suckers out there looking to buy something, I have this great idea to sell dog food on the internet. Fire me off an email, we’ll do lunch.

The Gmaps Pedometer is a nifty extension of Google Maps that allows you to measure the distance of your favorite hiking, running, biking or walking route. It’s quite simple: you zoom in to your neighborhood or location and start double-clicking your route. It calculates the total distance and places markers at each mile. You can also turn on a calorie counter and an elevation grid.

Several reports lately have pointed to large increases in corporate budgets for Web development. The latest confirmation of this trend comes from Piper Jaffray senior research analyst Safa Rashtchy via ClickZ News. One of the key drivers of this increased demand is the need to optimize company Web sites to get the most return from online marketing activities.
In the past, Web site development stood on its own, but now one of the primary drivers of Web site design and function is how it will be integrated into online and offline campaigns. Consequently, marketing people are becoming the primary drivers of the design, development, architecture and ongoing implementation process.
