A new study conducted by comScore and the Kelsey Group shows consumers are willing to pay up to 99 percent more for a product that has received an excellent online review. Respondents in the study also said online reviews had a significant impact on offline purchases. The highest category was hotels, with 87 percent of people indicating that the online rating was a major factor determining where they ultimately stayed. In addition, 97 percent indicated the reviews were accurate.

YuMe Out To Tame Video For The Internet

imageAdvertising on the Web has been evolving from text-based, to static or animated display ads, and, most recently, to video. While advertisers would like to take advantage of the video capabilities a growing broadband-powered Internet is providing, trying to harness online video-based marketing has been a bit chaotic. A company called YuMe would like to bring some order to the chaos.

Similar to the way a keyword entry in a search engine brings you to both relevant organic and paid text ads, the YuMe network would help deliver video-based advertising in the same manner. In addition, it would provide the same types of controls and measurement capabilities that have made services like Google’s AdWords so popular.

Minnesota Gets A New Kind Of Newspaper

imageThe circulation figures for many of the country’s biggest traditional newspapers have declined sharply in the last year (see Media Shifts Continue). Most pundits blame competition from the Internet for the decline in newspaper subscriptions. So it is interesting to see that Joel Kramer, the former publisher of the Minnesota Star Tribune, has now started a new digital distribution newspaper called the MinnPost.com. Kramer exited the Star Tribune when it was bought by McClatchy several years ago.
