The ad revenue for March Madness is expected to exceed a half-billion dollars this year ranking it as the top post-season sporting venue against all other sports, pro or college. It even exceeds the Super Bowl. The top four ad revenue producers in 2006 included:
NCAA March Madness ($497 million)
Pro Basketball playoffs ($424 million)
Pro Football playoffs including the Super Bowl ($423 million)
Pro Baseball playoffs including the World Series ($383 million)

This year St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday and according to the National Retail Federation (NRF), that is going to result in some major spending (story here). A recently completed NRF Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey estimates consumers will spend almost $3.8 million for this occasion, up about 25 percent over last year. According to the results, almost one-third of consumers stated they planned to celebrate the day by attending a party or a bar. Hmmmmm...there are a lot more people of Irish decent in the country than I thought.
Apple presents us all with the equivalent of a graduate level course in marketing according to Harvard Business School professor David Yoffie (Yahoo News story here). Start with a lesson in PR: Apple has generated over $400 million in free publicity since the announcement of their iPhone and it is still months from distribution. As Yoffie says, “No other company has ever received that kind of attention for a product launch...it’s unprecedented.”
As reported by AP and Business Week Online , Wal-Mart will today start selling car receivers for digital radio, also known as HD Radio (which is free, and should not be confused with subscription-based satellite radio).
