4:3 TVs Out; 16:9 TVs In
byFor anybody still planning video production in the analog TV format take note: As of October 1st, you can no longer buy an analog 4:3 format TV at Best Buy (except for existing inventory). Everything they will now be selling is the digital format only.
It still amazes me to see so many low definition television commercials in high definition programming. The quality difference is noticeable and sends a brand message that can’t be good unless you’re trying to go for the nostalgic look. Yes, the actual number of homes that can receive HDTV programming is still relatively small, but that number is growing quickly. In addition, the homes that are presently connected to HDTV represent a more affluent market with higher disposable incomes. That seems to add up to a real opportunity for advertisers who are looking for ways to distinguish their brand.
Many companies use video footage for years, so when the final digital mandate takes effect February 18, 2009 (16 months from now), many companies may find much of their present video footage instantly dated or obsolete.
