Avis Tries Harder with Wireless in Rental Cars

by

Ready to surf the internet from your car? The “connected car” is closer than you think. As reported in the New York Times, Avis Rent A Car System and Autonet will soon offer business travelers “rolling WiFi” hotspot that delivers to its cars high-speed Internet connections for only $10.95/day.

As reported in the NY Times article, the head of AutoNet said the device uses the 3G cellular network and will work in all major metropolitan areas and in about 95 percent of the country. It uses a notebook-size portable device that plugs into a car’s power supply and delivers the Internet connection.

Questions about the legality of operating a car with a WiFi hotspot onboard could arise. AutoNet execs, undeterred, claim the service is for passengers.
