Fantasy Football Builds Huge Following

by

Depending on your perspective, fantasy football is pure nirvana, a workplace productivity time-waster, a way to connect with your husband, or just plain geeky.

But as the new NFL season begins, there’s little doubt the pigskin hobby has reached unmistakable influence and reach. Consider some stats from a recent CNNMoney story:

  • According to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (yes, it’s a real organization), an estimated 15-18 million Americans play fantasy sports with an annual increase of 7-10%.
  • Of that total, roughly 85% play fantasy football.
  • In terms of demographics, fantasy players tend to be “predominantly male, married, in a high income bracket and more likely to do research or make purchases online.”
  • Yahoo! has been the online leader with its free games, but ESPN is making a serious run. Sports Illustrated and Yahoo! have teamed up for a marketing partnership.
  • ESPN’s major advertisers include GMC, Samsung, DirecTV and Coca-Cola.

Impressive numbers and facts – and a niche audience that advertisers should not ignore. And finally, best wishes to San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson, my first pick in this year’s Sundog draft.
