Phil’s Links for Sunday, June 4th
byIt seems I always end up either starting a post that I never finish or collecting a pile of URLs I want to write about and don’t. Rather than let them go to waste, I thought I’d try something I’ve seen used to great success on other blogs — the link dump post!
- Yokel beta lets you search for products based on your location. In theory, it seems like a great idea but perhaps once again the joy is lost on me since I live in Fargo. I have no idea how they plan to get this to work, but if they do they, could have a winner. My test search for “bird feed” did not give me the local store I was expecting. Then again, like I said, I live in Fargo. We just don’t get this fun stuff to work very well most of the time.
- Kebberfegg is one of the stranger names yet for a web app, kebberfegging could help you keep on top of things you want to keep track of though. In a nutshell, Kebberfegg will create an RSS feed for you based on your search term and a huge variety of sites for you to grab. Say you want a feed of anything posted on the popular site Digg that includes your name, well...now you an have it. Services like this have existed before, but this one really seems to simplify it for you. I think this is one of the better uses of RSS outside of merely syndicating content. Want to keep up on what people are writing about your company (or you)? Just create an RSS search and save yourself some time.
- We all have one, that person that insists on forwarding you every single joke, video and photo they find online. If you haven’t been sure how to ask them to stop without offending them, check out the new service by 43folders called Thanks. No.
- Finally, in the “why didn’t I think of that?” department is One Thousand Paintings. An enterprising person (that by the way, once again isn’t you) is selling 1000 paintings, each with a number from 1 to 1000. The price depends on a formula making the lower numbers more expensive and raises the price each time another 100 are sold. Right now, it looks like the halfway mark was hit and only 483 paintings exist. I just about bought one the other day for $40, now the lowest priced one is $151. So, I wonder if they painted them all first or waited to see how well it was going to work?
