Can I Get You A Pop…Soda…?

Billions of dollars are spent every year on soft drink advertising in the United States. With this large expenditure, you would think a national consensus would arise on the term we use to offer someone this type of beverage. Nope. The map above shows a county by county breakdown across our entire country on what term people use to offer someone a soft drink.
Pop is big in the North. Soda is popular in the East. People in the South often use coke as a generic term that describes all carbonated soft drinks. In transition areas, the term soda pop is often used. And, of course, some people actually do say, “Can I get you a soft drink?” There’s more on the Pop vs. Soda controversy here.
