Children Perform Many Online Chores
byFor many people, TiVo has eliminated the need for a child to program their VCR (as the old joke goes). But according to a new research report, adults ask kids to complete a wide range of online tasks.
According to the Stars for Kidz survey, as reported by ClickZ, here are the top online “chores” for 8-14 year-olds:
- Share pictures and e-mails with relatives (38%)
- Get movie listings (38%)
- Invitations and party planning (36%)
- Plan vacations/travel (36%)
- Get driving directions (35%)
And maybe the most noteworthy (even eye-opening) statistics from the 8-14 year-old crowd:
- 26% average more than three hours online each day
- 77% routinely shop online
- 14% have helped parents complete their income tax return
This report certainly supports the idea that younger generations are “digital natives,” as Shel Holtz often calls them (versus those of us in the “digital immigrants” generation). The proof? About half of the study’s respondents help with online chores because their parents are “clueless” online.
