My 2006 Christmas List
byWith Thanksgiving nearing, I thought it was time to put together my Christmas wish list so Santa knows what to bring. Without further ado and in particular order, here is my 2006 Christmas list…
Web 2.5
Web 2.0 is beginning to get really boring guys. How many to-do lists, note takers, calendars, virtual desktops, social networks, bookmarking and Digg-clones are we going to build? Yes, all of these things were really cool when it all started. Heck, I couldn’t get enough of it. But now every week brings an entire new batch of the same thing. Let’s see something new. I don’t think we can have Web 3.0 until Web 2.5 shows some truly amazing applications of the technology and ideas of Web 2.0.
Gdrive
Google, please for everybody’s sake get Gdrive out the door. It isn’t like you’re averse to release buggy ‘beta’ products. For goodness sake, it took you until last week to add a ‘Reply’ button to the TOP of Gmail. Give me tons of online storage for all my Google data and whatever else to be in one nice little spot. And if I can use it like Amazon’s S3, well that would even be cooler.
Chumby
Unless you’re pretty geeky, you probably haven’t heard of Chumby yet. First, I have to admit the name alone makes me want the damn thing. How can you go wrong with a Chumby, no matter what it is. Chumby will be the must-have gadget if the thing ever sees the light of day. Imagine a small, squeezable, wireless computer that is 100% hackable and you have a Chumby. Explanations don’t work well, until you see what Chumby is it’s hard to get too excited about it. Well, other than the cute name.
The “true” video iPod and/or the iPhone
One I truly do want and the other I’m merely tired of the rumors. As much as I’ve said I wouldn’t watch videos on a small screen, I want this mythical full-screen, touch-enabled iPod. Just give it to me already or I might buy a Zune (okay, now that was a complete lie). This is further down the list because I really don’t think we’ll see this before next year. With the shopping season just starting Apple isn’t going to confuse iPod buyers with more choices. Let’s sell those nanos!!! As far as the iPhone, please either release some crappy phone and let it fail so people quit talking about it or get the real one out. Why aren’t there any iTV rumors, that product seems incredibly more interesting than a phone.
Media-free Movies
This is a long shot and certainly won’t happen this Christmas, but could we just skip over the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle which is really just another ploy by the studios to make everybody buy all their favorite movies again. Look, I’m not gonna play that game, so for everybody’s sake (because I’m always right), let’s jump directly to digital downloads. Yeah, yeah the pipes aren’t big enough and it takes too long. So what I say. With no consensus on what player will “win” and not many movies to buy anyway, I don’t see the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray option as looking so great either. I’m fine with DVD resolution downloads for now, I don’t think the public is clamoring all that much for better resolution movies and TV series. Live events like sports are great in HD, but really Scrubs is still funny even if I can’t read the words on Dr. Cox’s clipboard.
Now that you know what I want — I’m not asking for much am I? — what would you like to see this year for Christmas?
