Outdoor Advertising Growing Fast In China

by from Beijing

As I mentioned in a recent post, online marketing in China is growing fast.  Another recent article in eMarketer confirms this and reports online advertising is expected to grow 60 percent this year.  The eMarketer story also projects outdoor advertising to have an expected growth of 25 percent this year.

It is easy to spot the growth of outdoor advertising when I’m out on the streets of Beijing.  Within the last year, the city has begun upgrading most forms of the public transportation system: bus, taxi, and subways.  The new systems are all cashing in on the recent advertising boom.  Most new taxis and buses are equipped with TVs that display advertisements and entertainment.  The buses have also become moving billboards, advertising anything from digital cameras to internet sites.  Also, there will be four more subway lines added in Beijing that are supposed to be finished sometime next year.  The subways and buses are all filled with advertising.  Just about everything from the handles to the backrests are now ad spaces.

The growth of the Chinese economy and the increase in marketing activity are creating increased consumer awareness.  Trendy ad campaigns now seem more effective in grabbing consumer’s attention, and their wallets.  With China and with Beijing hosting the Olympic Games in 2008, the marketing is sure to continue its surge.
