Social Network Syncing with Genome

by

So you consider yourself a Facebook fanatic, a MySpace master, a lover of LinkedIn, a terror with Twitter, a dedicated Digg and Del.icio.us diva… Okay, I’ll stop with the alliteration. How many different social networking accounts do you have? If you’re anything like me, you’ve signed up for too many (and many you’ve probably forgotten about).

The big problem with having so many social networking options is setting up your personal information separately on each one. Sure, you could just pick one or two favorites, but what’s the fun in that? With such a proliferation of social sites offering new and interesting features, you may not be able to avoid adding another one to your list—and filling out yet another signup form.

Enter Genome. Yes, it is another social networking site, but the difference is that Genome will allow you to synchronize your account information on all of your other social networking sites automatically. Update your Facebook account, and Genome captures those changes and pushes them out to MySpace, LinkedIn, or any other compatible network.

What’s the catch? Currently Genome is vaporware, but it is due to enter a closed beta test period starting in October 2008. Other social networking sites will also need to add support for Genome. Whether they will do so is anybody’s guess, especially since some of the big names in the social networking space already have their own information sharing initiatives.

Regardless of the success or failure of Genome, it is good to see these sites seeking ways to help their users manage the proliferation. For now, I suppose it’s time to update my accounts again.
