Technology and the Speed of Mouth II: The Race is On!

by

I had been anxiously awaiting the release of Mario Kart for the Nintendo Wii since I heard about it last fall. There is just something about racing classic Nintendo characters that I can’t seem to get enough of.

Flashback to Sunday. I’m working diligently on a web design project. Of course I have Twitteriffic running silently in the background. You just never know when you’re going have a random thought to purge.

11:23 am - The Twitter silence is broken. My old pal (and now hero) Jon Erdmann fires off a tweet that reads, “Zut alors! Mario Kart comes out today!”

11:24 am - My response: “WHAT!?”

11:25 am - Jon: “Yup! For the Wii!”

11:26 am - I call Matt. “Does Mario Kart REALLY come out today?” Matt: “That’s what we heard.”

11:28 am - A quick check of the Nintendo website and I was on my way out the door, cell phone in hand. At the stop lights (safety first!) I’m texting and calling other Mario Kart lovers. Since the new Mario Kart can be played online with people around the world, it’s time to get my Wii friends out of bed and down to a store.

11:30 am - Almost to Target. The phone rings. It’s Darin. Me: “Get down to Target now!” Darin: “I know! I saw the Twitter! I was just about to call you. I’ll be right there.”

11:38 am - Standing in line. Waiting patiently. Texting Darin farther down the line: “Are you too scared to cut? Chicken.”

Noon - Doors open

12:02 pm - Purchase made. Time to head home.

12:12 pm - Back home. Who needs lunch? I have Mario Kart. Time to blow the shell off a Koopa Troopa. MWAA-HAA-HA!

From Twitter to Wii in 49 minutes.
