The ABCs of AJAX

by

Sundog colleague is tracking the rapid evolution of AJAX in the development community and how it is affecting IT giants like Sun, IBM and Microsoft.

But if you’re like this blogger, the AJAX buildup doesn’t totally make sense yet and it hasn’t reached most communications and marketing professionals. At the same time, AJAX is intriguing – and it definitely seems primed for explosive growth this year.

For the AJAX-challenged, here’s what you need to know:

  • It’s a combination of development technologies, including XML and JavaScript
  • AJAX promises to make online systems behave more like desktop applications such as Microsoft Office
  • It gives the web more interactivity and functions (including new ways to drag buttons, navigate pulldowns, move images, etc.)
  • Because it requires less server interaction, AJAX doesn’t affect your computer’s speed and performance
  • Several development tools are being developed to use AJAX’s potential
  • AJAX works best in newer browsers

You’ve probably experienced AJAX while using Google Maps or other leading sites. To learn more, start with the Wikipedia entry and follow the links and tutorials at the bottom of that page.
